The most important concept in defining the standards of education is educational leadership. Without educational leadership, a classroom setting would not be conducive to learning. It is also important to instill the leadership skills that define educational leadership into the students who will one day need those skills in order to lead others in a job or once again in a classroom.

Educational leadership begins all the way at the top with those who run the school. If they are taking on their role as leader seriously, it will show all the way down the ladder to the students. Students are the only concern when it comes to educational leadership. The school must care about giving the students the right start with their approach to educational leadership in order to produce people who are one day able to lead their own group of people with equality and sensitivity.

Getting The Message Out

To be able to produce new leaders, the classroom must be the first place that students encounter good leadership. Teachers must offer themselves as an example of the leadership skills that the institution would like to give to the students. Educational leadership can come into play in many ways within the classroom. Once the teacher has established their role as a leader, it is time to let the students show that they understand these concepts and can put them into real world situations. Many teachers allow their students to show their leadership skills by putting them into groups to reach a common goal. Many times a leader will emerge naturally. Teachers can also give students the opportunity to fill their shoes for a time and let them show educational leadership by leading the whole class in a concept or lesson relating to their subject.

Once educational leadership had been defined to the students in the classroom, it is the institutions responsibility to provide other real world leadership opportunities to the students. This can come in the form of student government and student organizations. These extensions of educational leadership will supplement what the students have learned in the classroom and give them the practice they need in sharpening their leadership skills.

It is important to use educational leadership as a tool for teaching rather than using it to dictate behavior. This will show the students that sensitivity and fairness in a leadership role is just as important as the end product. It will only benefit the students in the end, who are the leaders of the future.

Many people take the word leadership a little too lightly. Many consider leadership to be something you’re given. Such is the case when people are promoted to management. They think that just because they have the word manager on their nametag or stamped on their door that they’re automatically a good leader. Or they think that because everyone is supposed to follow them, and others are supposed to do what they say, that others will actually follow them and do what they say. However, leadership is something you have to earn. It is something that can be taught but it has to start within you. You have to care about what you’re doing, about who you’re leading and you have to set an example if you want others to follow you.

Setting A Good Example

Nobody is going to follow your leadership if you don’t set a good example. For instance, if you are the manager over a group of people and you tell them not to take smoke breaks, then you go out and have a smoke break of your own, what are your ‘employees’, or subordinates, going to think? Are they going to follow you? They may do what you say because they don’t want to lose their job but they’re not going to respect you. They’re probably going to talk badly behind your back and the entire organization will suffer. Respect is a huge part of leadership.

Respect

You have to earn respect, just as you have to earn leadership. Respect is not something you can install in others; it’s not something you can make others do. You can’t force others to respect you. Many people try to force their leadership through fear. Sure, people will do what you say but they’re not going to respect you. They’re going to fear you but they’re not going to respect you. So to be a good leader, you need to do a few things.

Good Leadership

You need to believe in whatever cause or venture you are pursuing. You need to be firm but fair and to be a good leader, you need to set a good example. If you follow these tenets and you show your subordinates that you truly have passion for what you’re doing, then your organization or whatever else your leading, is sure to succeed. For more references, think back to a good leader that you had in your past and follow those examples. You can be a good leader, it just takes time and it cannot come automatically with any sort of promotion
