Leadership Skills

When asking the question what is leadership, one tends to think of people who are successful. The real fact is all successful people are not good leaders. You may have a successful football player that can help his team make it to the Super Bowl, but that does not necessarily mean that he could be a good coach. It is true that most successful coaches were good football players at one time, but not all players possess the ability to lead the team.

A leader is someone who has a vision and knows how they want to achieve that vision. When they talk about the future they do so with positive enthusiasm. When asking what leadership is, you are trying to determine if that person has the qualities to motivate others to do what is needed of them. A leader must be excited about the challenges which face them and they must anticipate each hurdle with excitement.

What Is Leadership The Test

When you are looking for a person to serve in a leadership role, there are several things that can help you determine who the right person is. A leader is never satisfied with things the way they are. A leader always looks for ways to improve a situation, product, or service.

What is leadership in the workplace? It is a person who is willing to listen to ideas and adapt to change if change will make conditions better. A leader will be someone who is respected by their peers, even if their peers do not entirely believe in everything they do. Leadership is not a popularity contest, but there must be a quality present that says I know what I am doing. A good leader will be able to ask something of others without the others showing resentment.

You can always ask a person what is leadership in their opinion, and then you can judge their answer. A true leader will show you their mental strength and tell you what leadership means to them. They will be able to give you ideas about their leadership qualities and how they plan to achieve the respect which is afforded a leader.

A leader will also be able to take criticism and understand that it is for their benefit. A leader will possess a strong ability to listen and learn, as well as lead and motivate others. A leader will have to ability to command attention. When they talk, people will listen to what they have to say. A lot of people can get up and make a speech in front of an audience, but a true leader can capture the attention of that audience and make them listen.

Secrets Of Leadership Success – Good Leadership Skills

The thing that sets great leaders apart from the ordinary ones is their knowledge about the secrets of leadership success. Mentors teach different types of leadership styles; it also learned through attending seminars and also exists as part of an individual’s innate personal leadership skill that has been developed over the years and more importantly, existing possibly since birth. Natural leadership abilities combined with nurturing these skills and abilities through leadership development is what defines one’s leadership style.

Click Here to Learn How to Lead Effectively!

One of the most important factors that play a very important role to be an effective leader is to be able to communicate well to other people; he should have the ability to convey the organization’s visions and goals. In addition to that, knowledge and other technical expertise must be clearly communicated and imparted to all the people around him.

Contrary to what other people may think, leadership is not about power, it is not about driving individuals to do what you want to accomplish through fear and intimidation. This is definitely a wrong way to lead people. To be a great leader and an effective one, you must be able to influence and inspire those people under your leadership to accomplish a particular goal or an objective of the team or an organization.

In order to be a good leader, it takes a lot more than being knowledgeable in their chosen career. It is not just all about taking charge and delegating works to be done to others. A remarkable leader is someone who has the ability to recognize everyone’s greatest value in their area of influence, and in order to do this he has to see others with insight and compassion.

There’s no doubt that a group or an organization will be able to perform to its maximum level effectively, when there is a good leader to guide the members or employees, and keep them motivated towards the path of success. In order to be a remarkable leader, an individual must possess very effective leadership qualities, and these are very important factors about the secrets of leadership success.

Question by Chioke S: What are the best ways to gain leadership skills?
I want to become better as a person, so I want to learn some leadership and good team working skills. So when no one wants to be the leader, I’ll take the position effectively. But I also want to be able to take orders and work well in a group of different people. Any advice?

Best answer:

Answer by fs921
If no one wants to take charge and you step in make sure you don’t overuse the power. It all depends on the situation. If there’s a team project and you take up that position it is important that you know what you’re doing (as in organized and have plans) and make sure you have an open mind to what everyone has to bring to the table. If all you do is do what you want no one will wanna work with you so listen to others. As a leader, sometimes you have to delegate and allow others to do things so listening to what your team members have to say is important.

Give your answer to this question below!

Leadership Skill Assessment – Do You Have the Potential to Be an Effective Leader?

What is a leadership skill? There are numerous skills you desire if you want to be an effective manager or leader. One important leadership skill is motivation, for example. You must be able to motivate your team to reach a common goal. Sounds easy enough, but it isn’t always that simple. This is just one of many; if you want to be a great manager or leader, read about each individual leadership skill to determine if you possess the characteristics to manage a group of people effectively.

If you are a leader, you likely have a vision; this means that you can spot a problem that perhaps others cannot see, or even if they can you are willing to go forward and tackle the problem, reach the goal – do whatever is necessary to improve the situation. See if you have each leadership skill below, and if your skill is fully developed to its optimum potential.

The ability to take action. This is an essential leadership skill; after all, if you are not able to take action toward pursuing goals, that means you will not be able to carry forward with any other necessary skills such as motivating, communicating or planning. As a leader, you must be willing to take initiative and get things done. You don’t wait around on someone else to get the ball rolling; you are ready and willing to do it yourself.

One extremely important leadership skill is effective communication. You talk to people every day, sure – but it takes more than the simple ability to talk or write to communicate with your workers. It is essential that you communicate in a way that your employees understand clearly the goal you are moving toward, and that they are excited and motivated about accomplishing that goal. You want to instill confidence in them and make them feel part of the “team.”

Motivation is perhaps THE leadership skill above all others that you must possess in order to be an outstanding manager. In every group, there are those people who are willing to do their best for the company, and there are always those “difficult” people that seem to disagree at every turn. Motivation is a leadership skill that is crucial in order to persuade every person on the team to want to do their best – and you have to know how to push those buttons.

The ability to plan is another necessary leadership skill. In order to reach the end result you desire, you have to plan to achieve that goal. Careful thought and planning will help you keep your team moving toward the goal so that should any “glitch” or problem occur, you know how to move beyond that problem swiftly.

When reading about each leadership skill above, does it strike a chord with you? Some individuals have what is necessary to become a great leader, but needs to develop their skills further. Give careful thought to each leadership skill so that you can determine which areas you may need to improve in order to achieve a vision through exceptional leadership.

Stress Management Skills

There is good news about stress management skills. They can be improved, and we have some excellent new technology available that will help with that if you want to go the technology route.

If you are interested in more traditional stress management, then read Mantak Chia’s book, “Becoming a Multiorgasmic Man”.

Get your attention?

Chia does not sell any potions or wave any magic wands though.

You practice and learn very disciplined breathing and attentional skills, which are the essence of stress management skills.

Our body is fast in terms of stress response. Without a fast stress response, which is designed to get my body prepared for a life or death action in much less time than it takes me to blink my eyes, even two to four times faster than I can blink my eyes, we would not have been able to hunt effectively, and by the way, that hunting happened in teams, or defend myself from attacks from other bigger, stronger hunters.

That same physiology which is so well adopted to the wild, actually hinders my ability to handle a marital dispute or my ability to handle a customer service issue, for example.

However, there is good news for our stress management skills. We have been successful at this stress management process thousands of times.

The bad news is that when we do not manage our stress response, and we move in to full blown fight or flight syndrome, people can get hurt, because in fight or flight or freeze chemistry, those are our only behavioral choices.

The experience of that adrenalin rush, called ‘combat rush’ can get addictive, because you do feel very alive, but the physiology is designed to keep you alive when you are in a life or death situation.

It is certainly appropriate to seeing an oncoming driver in your lane, but not to a work or marital disagreement.

Just for a Moment Imagine…. that you have won the lottery. Now tell me what feeling you have?

For most folks the thought of winning the lottery brings a feeling of excitement and some immediate spending plans.

Now imagine having this thought about having won the lottery;

“It is not enough, once again the state has cheated me!”

What feelings accompany that thought?

For most folks the feeling is bitter resentment, and by the way, I use this scenario in my anger management groups, so I have seen the response of folks who create those thoughts.

Stress Management Skill #1-Change the Thought to Change the Feeling

Stress Management Skill#2-Change the Thought to Change the Feeling Frequently.

Stress feelings or happy feelings follow a thought.

In the above scenario, feelings of happiness or resentment follow a thought about winning the lottery.

So it is my thoughts about situations in my life which bring feelings, and if the feeling I am having is a worry or fear or anxiety kind of feeling, related to thoughts about being overwhelmed or not having the skills or resources necessary to handle the situation at hand, all I have to do to change the chemistry in my body is to change the thought or better yet, the thinking and breathing pattern to thoughts which relax and breathing which is deeper and longer.

Of course, that doesn’t do anything for soothing the angry customer.

What changing the thought/breathing pattern can do is open higher perceptual centers in the brain for brainstorming solutions that help your customer, for example, feel like he or she is important to you.

Why Not Practice Stress Management Skills on a Schedule?

If you stop and think about it folks, we practice stress thinking and chemistry on a schedule, and that schedule is pretty much constant.

Why not practice stress management skills regularly too, so that you are in stress chemistry 50% of the time and Heartmath chemistry 50% of the time?

Heart rate variability biofeedback is an excellent tool that speeds up the process that Chia talks about in his book.

Heart rate variability is the name given to the process of learning to manage the time between heart beats, and it is easy and quick to learn, works in a heart beat, on any given heart beat, and does utilize deeper breathing and thoughts of appreciation and cooperation, so it is a great tool to use on any given heart beat to change the chemistry in my body.

One other side effect is that heart rate variability opens the higher perceptual centers in my brain, so I can schedule heart rate variability biofeedback for excellent brainstorming sessions.

Stress management skills learned the heart rate variability way are an integral part of any brain fitness workout too.

Why is stress management important in brain fitness? About 10-15 years ago the neuroscientists discovered that we grow new neurons every day, and those neurons can migrate to the hippocampus where they help me sustain memories.

However, they do not necessarily survive a brain bath of adrenalin or cortisol, so do your heart rate variability biofeedback regularly to bathe those new neurons in DHEA, the anti-aging hormone, instead of adrenalin and cortisol, and facilitate their movement to the memory centers, where you challenge them with a computerized novel learning experiences, which facilitates increased neuroplasticity which gives you greater problem solving skills for that irritated customer mentioned at the top of the article.

With a bit of practice, you will be writing to Mantak Chia, and offering him a critique.

esses today recognise the importance of good management that is based on firm and basic management skills-but how are these managers taught what are good leadership skills? Previously before the advent of training courses managers were expected to know the principles of good management and practise them with little in the way of assessment or training to ensure that all managers met certain standards. This would inevitably lead to inconsistencies in how leadership was practised and also result in poor practises being the norm-something which is not acceptable in the workplace of today.

If a business wants to have the best management and team leaders it is vital that they all possess excellent leadership skills such as the ability to work with people, to motivate others, provide negative and positive feedback, encourage their teams to strive for their targets as well as other aspects of the role. These are attributes that are not always inherent in a person and in order to provide a management structure that is positive and objective lead leader skills training can be a huge benefit.

Leadership skills courses can tend to be ‘hit and miss’ there are many company’s out there who will tell you that their leadership courses are the best and get many delegates this way, but who can you trust to deliver what they say? Any business that is looking to create a team of managers that have outstanding leadership skills which make them a credit to that business it is important that the training courses they attend build upon their existing skills and develop new ones. To be able to do this successfully training courses should be not only designed to include the objectives, vision and beliefs of the but also be cost effective and delivered in a timely fashion.

One way of doing this is to have an on-site training department that is responsible for training all employees but for the majority of small to medium sized businesses this is simply not a viable option as it is too costly. Instead it makes more sense financially and in terms of time spent training to use the services of an outside company to provide all your training needs. Deciding on the company that provides your leadership training can be difficult, so it is important to look to a company that will take the time to tailor a training course for your business and be on hand after the course to provide ‘after care’ for any questions or queries that delegates may have.

Premier Training are a training company that go out of their way to provide leadership training that is cost effective, efficient and gets you the results that you want for your management team. This is done by creating leadership skills training courses that are in line with the needs and requirements of your business and totally relevant, thanks to communication between the training planner at Premier Training (who is not a salesperson but a training expert) and yourself the business owner.
Leadership is vital for any organization’s sustained success. A great leader at top makes a big difference to his or her organization. Everyone will concur with these statements. Experts in human resources field mention the importance of leaders at all levels, and not just that of the leadership at the top. It is not without reason that companies like 3M, Proctor & Gamble, GE, Coca Cola; HSBC etc. have known to put in place processes for developing leaders continuously.

Mention this subject, however, to a line manager, or to a sales manager, or any executive in most organizations and you will probably deal with diffident responses.

Leadership development -a strategic need?

The subject of leadership is dealt with in a general way by many organizations. Leadership is usually understood in terms of personal attributes such as charisma, communication, inspiration, dynamism, toughness, instinct, etc., and not in terms what good leaders can do for their organizations. Developing leaders falls in HR domain. Budgets are framed and outlays are used with indicators like training hours per employee per year. Whether the good intentions behind the training budgets get translated into actions or not, is not monitored.

Such leadership development outlays that are based on only good intentions and general ideas about leadership get axed in bad times and get extravagant during good times. If having great or good leaders at all levels is a strategic need, as the above top companies demonstrate and as many leading management experts assert, why do we see such a stop and go approach?

Why is there skepticism about leadership development programs?

The first reason is that expectations from good (or great) leaders are not defined in operative terms and in ways in which the outcomes can be verified. Leaders are expected to achieve’ many things. They are expected to turn laggards into high performers, turn around companies, charm customers, and dazzle media. They are expected to perform miracles. These expectations remain just wishful thinking. These desired outcomes can not be used to provide any clues about gaps in leadership skills and development needs.

Absence of a comprehensive and generic (valid in diverse industries and conditions) framework for defining leadership means that leadership development effort are scattered and inconsistent in nature. Inconsistency gives bad name to leadership development programs. This breeds cynicism (these fads come and go….) and resistance to every new initiative. This is the second reason why the objectives of leadership development are often not met.

The third reason is in the methods used for leadership development. Leadership development programs rely upon a combination of lectures (e.g. on subjects like team building, communications), case studies, and group exercises (problem solving), and some inspirational talks by top business leaders or management gurus.

Sometimes the programs consist of outdoor or adventure activities for helping people bond better with each other and build better teams. These programs generate ‘feel good’ effect and in some cases participants ‘return’ with their personal action plans. But in majority of cases they fail to capitalize on the efforts that have gone in. I must mention leadership coaching in the passing. In the hands of an expert coach a willing executive can improve his leadership skills dramatically. But leadership coaching is too expensive and inaccessible for most executives and their organizations.

Leadership -a competitive advantage

During my work as a business leader and later as a leadership coach, I found that it is useful to define leadership in operative terms. When leadership is defined in terms of what it does and in terms of capabilities of a person, it is easier to assess and develop it.

When leadership skills defined in the above manner are present at all levels, they impart a distinct capability to an organization. This capability gives a competitive advantage to the organization. Organizations with a pipeline of good leaders have competitive advantages over other organizations, even those with great leaders only at the top. The competitive advantages are:

1. They (the organizations) are able to solve problems quickly and can recover from mistakes fast.

2. They have excellent horizontal communications. Things (processes) move faster.

3. They tend to be less busy with themselves. Therefore they have ‘time’ for outside people. (Over 70% of internal communications are about reminders, error corrections etc . They are wasteful)

4. Their staff (indirect) productivity is high. This is one of the toughest management challenges.

5. They are good at heeding to signals related to quality, customer complaints, shifts in market conditions and customer preferences. This leads to good and useful bottom-up communication. Top leaders tend to have less number of blind spots in such organizations.

6. It is easier to roll out programs for strategic shift and also for improving business processes (using Six Sigma, TQM, etc.). Good bottom-up communications improve top-down communications too.

7. They require less ‘supervision’, since they are strongly rooted in values.

8. They are better at preventing catastrophic failures.

Expectations from good and effective leaders should be set out clearly. The leadership development programs should be selected to develop leadership skills that can be verified in operative terms. Since leadership development is a strategic need, there is a need for clarity about the above aspects.

Hemant Karandikar advises companies on business & brand strategy, on business transformation, and for achieving breakthroughs in business processes. He leverages this expertise in product creation projects for companies along with his design associates. He coaches business leaders and executives for developing leadership skills. Hemant founded Exponient Consulting and Learning Leadership.

Previously, Hemant was Managing Director, GWT Global Weighing (now Sartorius Mechatronics) and held position of General Manager at Philips India. He is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India.

For Onsite and online coaching for leadership development, please visit http://www.learning-leadership.com/

About the Author:

The technique of charismatic leadership isnt entirely new, but it is something that more and more people are finding themselves interested in. Its a good technique to use combined with other leadership skills, and its a pretty easy concept to grasp.

The fist thing to do when learning leadership skills is to learn the basics and then grow from there. After you understand the basics and you are comfortable as well as successful in your role, trying new techniques is a great way to enhance your leadership skills.

Learning New Techniques

Charismatic leadership techniques are a great addition to those who participate in Do as I do, not as I say leadership practices. When it comes to learning new techniques, youll first want to know what the technique is about and what it means, after which youd decide how to educate yourself on the technique and then put it into practice.

What is Charismatic Leadership?

This type of leadership is centered around how the leader builds up enough self confidence to attract others. By using grace, charm and self belief you will create a persona that that draws others to it because they want to be as confident and self assured as you.

By being in a charismatic leadership role, you wont use power or leverage over people to get their cooperation. Instead, youll use friendship and a strong willed personality to maintain being a leader. This technique also requires the ability to easily scan and take in an environment at any given time.

Charismatic leaders also tend to move from person to person, all the while making the person they are talking to feel as if theyre the only person in the room. This makes memorable communication between a leader and a team of people.

Showing great confidence in followers is a good sign of well developed charismatic leadership skills. A leader may even show self sacrifice for something they believe in which helps to build trust within a team environment.

Body language as well as verbal language will play a big role in your ability to develop great charismatic leadership skills, youll learn that displaying self confidence at all times is the best way to learn proper body and verbal language for any situation. Finally, continuing to lead a team in the same manner will help build a solid foundation in your progress.

You can find online and community classes to learn charismatic leadership skills so check with your local community college for more information.

How to Become an Ideal Leader

When you are at work, do you get frustrated because things don’t seem to be happening the way they’re supposed to be? You see people milling around but nothing gets accomplished. And in the daily hustle and bustle, do you feel that your goals remain just that – goals. Then maybe its time for you to stand up and do something about it.

Most people are content just to stand around listening for orders. And it isn’t unusual to adopt a follow-the-leader mentality. But maybe, somewhere inside of you, you feel the desire to make things happen – to be the head, not the tail. Then maybe leadership just suits you fine.

Some people believe that great leaders are made, not born. Yes, it may be true that some people are born with natural talents. However, without practice, without drive, without enthusiasm, and without experience, there can be no true development in leadership.

You must also remember that good leaders are continually working and studying to improve their natural skills. This takes a commitment to constantly improve in whatever endeavor a person chooses.

First of all, let’s define leadership. To be a leader, one must be able to influence others to accomplish a goal, or an objective. He contributes to the organization and cohesion of a group.

Contrary to what most people believe, leadership is not about power. It is not about harassing people or driving them using fear. It is about encouraging others towards the goal of the organization. It is putting everyone on the same page and helping them see the big picture of the organization. You must be a leader not a boss.

First of all, you have to get people to follow you. How is this accomplished?

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you if they see that you know where you are going. Remember that bumper sticker? The one that says, don’t follow me, I’m lost too? The same holds true for leadership. If you yourself do not know where you’re headed to, chances are people will not follow you at all.

You yourself must know the vision of the organization. Having a clear sense of hierarchy, knowing who the bosses are, who to talk to, the organization’s goals and objectives, and how the organization works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not about what you make others do. It’s about who you are, what you know, and what you do. You are a reflection of what you’re subordinates must be.

Studies have shown that one other bases of good leadership is the trust and confidence your subordinates have of you. If they trust you they will go through hell and high water for you and for the organization.

Trust and confidence is built on good relationships, trustworthiness, and high ethics.

The way you deal with your people, and the relationships you build will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. The stronger your relationship, the stronger their trust and confidence is in your capabilities.

Once you have their trust and confidence, you may now proceed to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake.

Communication is a very important key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly imparted to other people (free communication skills discussed here).

Also, you can not be a good leader and unless you have good judgment. You must be able to assess situations, weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and actively seek out a solution.

It is this judgment that your subordinates will come to rely upon. Therefore, good decision-making is vital to the success of your organization.

Leaders are not do-it-all heroes. You should not claim to know everything, and you should not rely upon your skills alone.

You should recognize and take advantage of the skills and talents your subordinates have. Only when you come to this realization will you be able to work as one cohesive unit.

Remember being a leader takes a good deal of work and time. It is not learned overnight. Remember, also, that it is not about just you. It is about you and the people around you.

So, do you have the drive and the desire to serve required of leaders? Do you have the desire to work cooperatively with other people? Then start now. Take your stand and be leader today.

Leadership skills can be learned, and many people naturally have the leadership ability. Either way, if youre in management or you own a company, leadership is essential. This is also true for those raising children or teaching in schools.

In order to get a full perspective of what leadership really is, you would need to have some kind of definition. But unlike many other words in our language, leadership is best defined by its attributes.

The Definition of Good Leadership

Good leadership is what makes companies money and keeps production stable. It also enables our young ones to learn to become responsible adults. But what is good leadership?

The definition of good leadership is established for a few different reasons. If someone leads by example, they show signs of good leadership. It may be a manager at work that does all of the duties he expects his employees to do, or a teacher who has no problem assigning herself homework.

Another definition of good leadership is the ability to be fair. By knowing how to eliminate biased opinions or to be realistic about what a person is capable of, you are ahead of the rest when it comes to good leadership.

On the other hand, on top of being fair youve got to be tough. Its important not to let people take advantage of you or have the opportunity to play on your weaknesses. In business and other places that require your leadership skills, being tough and standing your ground is a great definition of leadership.

Practice Makes Perfect

Not everyone is a natural leader, so if you find yourself in the position of a leadership role with no idea how to effectively become a leader, youre not alone. Practice the things you know are definitions of leadership until it becomes second nature. It takes time, so dont give up.

There are always new things to learn when it comes to leadership, including techniques, tactics and ideas. For support and resources on the subject, make sure to ask your human resources department for information and suggestions. You can also contact your states employment agency which offers a ton of information on leadership roles in the work place.

Of course, youll find plenty of online resources the deal with the definition of good leadership. The following is a list of these and includes but is not limited to:

- Forums

- Online Classes

- Printed Material

- Community Resource Information

When you’re a leader, you have a lot of pressure put on you to say the right things that will make your subordinates work hard and try the best they can. You don’t have to come up with original leadership quotes. You can use leadership quotes that have been used in the past as long as they have shown to be effective. Good leadership quotes should make your subordinates think. They should make them want to strive to be better than they already are and they should be memorable so that they stick in your subordinates’ heads. You can use any leadership quotes you want but here are a few examples.

Change Your Ways

One of the best leadership quotes that many leaders have used in the past is, “If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got.” Think about that for a moment. This is a great quote. It basically means that if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get the same results as in the past. Therefore, if you’re always failing at something, try something new. Change your ways. Try new and better ways of doing things and you’ll soon see great results. This is a leadership quote that’s memorable and is also very effective.

The Weakest Link

Probably the best known leadership quote is “The chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” Everyone has heard this quote at some time in their lives. It means that the weakest person can bring down the entire organization. If you have someone on your team who is always late or who is always disruptive, it can affect the entire team or organization. Therefore, everyone should strive to be as strong as they can. Everyone should try not to be the weakest link. If the weakest link doesn’t want to strive to become better, it’s best, as a leader, to get rid of that person so the rest of the team can become a better unit.

There are many more leadership quotes to be found. You may want to come up with a few on your own. Just remember that quotes are only part of the job. You can quote all day long but if you’re not leading by example, your quotes will only go in one ear and out the other. Leading others is no small job but it can be done if you truly care about those you’re leading and you truly care about the cause your leading them for.

If you want to be a good leader, there are several skills that it is important to have. Though there are different styles of leadership, certain skills are fundamental and are intrinsic qualities of a good leader. A common misconception about the list of leadership skills is that they include volume and bossiness, but this is not true at all. Leaders and non-leaders alike will benefit from learning what skills to look for in a leader.

Being A People Person

Part of being a good leader and possessing good leadership skills is knowing how to work with people. Being abrasive and bossy is not considered being a good leader. Good leadership is based largely on having good people skills. This means understanding both individual and group needs, as well as being able to respond to these needs. If you are able to do these things, then you will be able to motivate your team to do what you want instead of forcing or scaring them into doing so.

Putting Yourself Above The Crowd

As a leader, an important leadership skill is being able to set the example. While it is important that you do not put yourself above the rules or the law, you must also be able to act as the representative for the entire group, and that means setting a positive example and maintaining a positive image. This also means controlling the group and making sure that the group remains productive. The leadership skills of working with people and managing people are equal in importance.

Conflict Resolution

Perhaps the most important leadership skills one could have are conflict resolution. As a leader, you will be sure to encounter conflict more than once. Sometimes, this might be within your group. In that situation, counseling skills might come in handy, because they will enable you to be the mediator in a sticky situation.

Other times, the conflict will occur with the leader of another group, or with your own superior. Though these kinds of conflicts can be uncomfortable, it is important that you as a leader have the ability to handle them.

Being The Best You Can Be

Perhaps you are already in a leadership role of some sort. In that case, learning about the most important leadership skills will only help you to become a better leader. If you are not by nature a leader, then knowing about the skills that are important in leadership will only give you a better set of criteria when you evaluate your next boss or superior. Either way, leadership skills are extremely valuable for both the leader and the follower.

There are many differences in leadership style and each company may be looking for a different kind of leader. As an example, the Army is looking for a leader who is tough and is accustomed to getting the job done right the first time. Corporate leaders will be expected to have the ability to motivate the people under their authority. Sports leaders will have to be tough, yet they must have the respect of the team members or they will never be an effective leader.

One thing is for sure; having leadership skills is something that is necessary if you plan to succeed in your role as leader. Understanding your leadership style can greatly impact how effective you are as a leader.

Taking A Look At Different Leadership Styles

Autocratic leadership this type leadership style allows the leader to have complete power over his/her team. Team members are not allowed to provide input and suggestions. As a rule, team members resent this type of leader and they will not have respect for their leader.

Bureaucratic leadership these people usually follow the rules completely and do not allow deviation from them. This leadership style is often used in areas where there is an increased possibility of danger to the employees.

Charismatic leadership this leader will be considered to be a motivator who can demand enthusiasm and respect from his employees. The employees will consider it an honor to get to successfully complete each project they are given. In most circumstances, this leadership style is effective unless the leader should leave and the employees feel betrayed.

Transformational leadership a person who leads with this style will be able to create inspiration within their group. They are not the type of person who stays in their office and avoids the group. They are usually very visible and they believe in talking with their employees. They believe the employees should have an opportunity to make suggestions on ways to improve the workplace.

Democratic leadership the democratic leader will be the one to make the final decision, but they will accept and listen to input from the team members. This makes the employees feel that they have a say in their job duties. Employees who have input are usually happier about their jobs and are more inclined to do a good job. This type leadership also helps employees develop more skills which could someday help them get a promotion.

Leadership style is actually determined by the type of business or industry you are in. There is no one style that is suitable for everyone. Before you determine what type of leader you want to be you must first look within yourself and honestly assess your thoughts and ideas. You must then determine if you have the qualities and ability to be the type of leader that the situation calls for.
