Everyone has their own leadership style. It doesn’t matter if you’re the manager of a Burger King, the manager of a gas station, a school board leader, or anyone else that has power over a group of people. Some people are great leaders. In fact, it seems that some of us were born to lead. However, there are other leadership styles that don’t work so well. It’s those negative leadership styles that end up running the organizations they’re leading into the ground.

Good Styles

What makes a good style? You can tell a good leadership style by the work habits and the attitudes of the people they lead. Are the subordinates happy in their various roles? Do they have respect and passion for what they’re doing? More importantly, do they have respect for the leader who has that particular leadership style? If the answer is yes to one or more of the questions above, that means the leader has an excellent leadership style. But what is a good leadership style? A good leadership style is one where the leader or manager leads by example, where the person is firm but fair, and who generally gets along with the subordinates without fraternizing or becoming too buddy buddy with them. A good leader is someone the subordinates look up to and hope to emulate. That’s the best leadership style.

Bad Styles

Then, there are those leadership styles that aren’t very good. Those leaders typically lead by fear, lead by poor example, and really don’t care about the organization or the people they’re leading. They’re in it for the paycheck or the recognition and everyone else can go shove it. Who wants to follow that type of person? More importantly, who wants to emulate that type of style? People who lead by fear aren’t respected. People who lead by poor example have followers who do the same. And people who lead without caring have a bunch of subordinates who also don’t care. It’s this type of leadership style that causes organizations to fail.

Be A Great Leader

So if you’re a leader, use some of the examples above from the good styles above and you should have subordinates who follow your example, who respect you, and who genuinely care about you and the organization they’re working for. That’s what makes good leaders and that’s how businesses and other organizations shine above the rest of the competition.
