<p>When asking the question what is leadership, one tends to think of people who are successful. The real fact is all successful people are not good leaders. You may have a successful football player that can help his team make it to the Super Bowl, but that does not necessarily mean that he could be a good coach. It is true that most successful coaches were good football players at one time, but not all players possess the ability to lead the team.</p>
<p>A leader is someone who has a vision and knows how they want to achieve that vision. When they talk about the future they do so with positive enthusiasm. When asking what leadership is, you are trying to determine if that person has the qualities to motivate others to do what is needed of them. A leader must be excited about the challenges which face them and they must anticipate each hurdle with excitement.</p>
<p>What Is Leadership  The Test</p>
<p>When you are looking for a person to serve in a leadership role, there are several things that can help you determine who the right person is. A leader is never satisfied with things the way they are. A leader always looks for ways to improve a situation, product, or service.</p>
<p>What is leadership in the workplace? It is a person who is willing to listen to ideas and adapt to change if change will make conditions better. A leader will be someone who is respected by their peers, even if their peers do not entirely believe in everything they do. Leadership is not a popularity contest, but there must be a quality present that says I know what I am doing. A good leader will be able to ask something of others without the others showing resentment.</p>
<p>You can always ask a person what is leadership in their opinion, and then you can judge their answer. A true leader will show you their mental strength and tell you what leadership means to them. They will be able to give you ideas about their leadership qualities and how they plan to achieve the respect which is afforded a leader.</p>
<p>A leader will also be able to take criticism and understand that it is for their benefit. A leader will possess a strong ability to listen and learn, as well as lead and motivate others. A leader will have to ability to command attention. When they talk, people will listen to what they have to say. A lot of people can get up and make a speech in front of an audience, but a true leader can capture the attention of that audience and make them listen.</p>

<p>You have finally come into your own and landed a management job and now you want to develop good management skills. Obviously, you have already exhibited some skill to get where you are. Now you want to maintain your position or move up the ladder. This will take some skill, but it also takes knowing what not to do in your first week on the job. Below are a few do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts that you will want to keep in mind while developing your management skills.</p>
<p>Entrance</p>
<p>How you enter the company will determine a great deal about how you progress. You already know how important first impressions are and while you can overcome an initial faux pas, life will be much easier if you do not make mistakes early in the game. If you have been freshly hired into the company as management as opposed to moving up from within, you will want to tread lightly in the beginning.</p>
<p>Your first few weeks at a new company will involve nothing more strenuous than maintaining business as usual. Go in with guns blazing trying to transform the company will send a message that you think you know more than the employees do. And even worse, that you know more than managers who may have been there for years. This is not the first impression you want to make. Whether you see mistakes or not resist the temptation to make changes too early. You need to gain the respect and confidence of your colleagues before making radical suggestions.</p>
<p>Fired Up</p>
<p>It is easy to be overly excited in your new role. You may want to go at a fast pace all day and all night, which is to be expected but resisted. You can easily burn yourself out in your new position by trying to take on too much too soon. Working too many hours will reduce your personal productivity as well. At some point you may get burnt out. It is better to look at your normal day as challenge enough and target important work when you are most productive.</p>
<p>People Skills</p>
<p>When you are a manager, you will have to work with people at all levels, both inside and outside the company. Learn how to communicate effectively and develop some tact or diplomacy, both is even better. Part of this process will include getting to know the people you work with better. The more you understand them the better you can lead. For instance, if you know that Susie down the hall works well with limited instructions you can save valuable time by handing her assignments and letting her complete the tasks. On the other hand, you would work closely with those who want close guidance and support. Knowing how people work, their personality and even some understanding of their personal life will make you a more effective leader.</p>
<p>Conclusion</p>
<p>You do not have to know everything there is to know about management to take the position, however you will want to learn all you can quickly. A mentor is a great way to develop the skills you already have as well as learning some new ones. It can be exciting and fulfilling to manage a business, be it big or small. So make sure you are being the best manager you are capable of being.</p>

I want to become better as a person, so I want to learn some leadership and good team working skills. So when no one wants to be the leader, I&#8217;ll take the position effectively. But I also want to be able to take orders and work well in a group of different people. Any advice?</p>

<p><i>Answer by fs921</i><br/>If no one wants to take charge and you step in make sure you don&#8217;t overuse the power.  It all depends on the situation.  If there&#8217;s a team project and you take up that position it is important that you know what you&#8217;re doing (as in organized and have plans) and make sure you have an open mind to what everyone has to bring to the table.  If all you do is do what you want no one will wanna work with you so listen to others.  As a leader, sometimes you have to delegate and allow others to do things so listening to what your team members have to say is important.</p>

<p>        If you care about developing yourself as a leader, if you want more effective leadership skills, what should you do? What&#8217;s the best approach?</p>
<p>A lot of books have been written about leadership. There are hundreds in print right now. Many articles and videos are available on the topic, too. You&#8217;ll also find quite a few training programs, both online and on-site, and many are extremely well produced.</p>
<p>But to help you navigate through all these resources, consider this: there&#8217;s a huge difference between KNOWING something and DOING something. In the end, what you know is far less important than what you do with the knowledge. When you&#8217;re with people, are you applying what you learned? If you don&#8217;t translate knowledge into action, it&#8217;s not of much use to you.</p>
<p>Practically speaking, the best books, videos and training programs do a couple things. First, they present a model of effective leadership skills &#8211; they show you what you should be doing on the job. The problem is, not all of them do that. They may contain a lot of good information about leadership principles. Hopefully, the treatment is interesting. You may get some self-awareness; it&#8217;s always good to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. But what you really need to know is what you should be doing to get the best effort from your people. So ideally, you learn about a model of how to act with people. If the resource doesn&#8217;t give you this, you&#8217;re probably wasting your time with it.</p>
<p>But knowing what to do &#8211; having good models for effective leadership skills &#8211; is only the beginning. </p>
<p>A training course &#8211; even a two-week course, which is rare &#8211; isn&#8217;t enough to make you so comfortable with effective leadership skills that you wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to use them with people. The reason is that these courses have a lot of topics to cover and there&#8217;s not much time for in-class practice. It takes time to ingrain a skill to the point where you&#8217;d instinctively use it in the real world of work. That&#8217;s because it takes time for the brain cells involved in the skill to grow connections and form a network that makes the skill efficient and comfortable. You have to apply what you learned over and over again to rewire your brain for the skill. How long depends on how many opportunities you take to apply it. The idea is to make an effective leadership skill a work habit, and that could take months, or as long as a year. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s how you develop any habit, a skill, or a behavior pattern. There&#8217;s no shortcut. You have to do the work. And the only place this can happen is on the job.</p>
<p>When it comes to developing effective leadership skills, experience really is the best teacher. A smart manager takes cues from her interactions with people. For example, someone might say, &#8220;I don&#8217;t like it when you talk to me that way.&#8221; Or something might go wrong in your group. You may be trying things and they&#8217;re not working. Each of these instances is an experience from which you can learn. </p>
<p>So when you pick up suggestions about what to do as a leader, try them and learn from the experiences. If you do this, day after day, year after year, you&#8217;re going to be involved in the best kind of leadership development program there is.</p>

<p>It is not an easy task to develop good communication skills. However, by taking one step at a time, you can achieve this goal. So the steps to develop verbal communication skills are as follows:<br />
1. ORAL – This is one of the most important as well as the most used verbal communication skills. Oral communication is all about the spoken word. By taking care of this aspect of communication skills, you will get a chance to enhance your conversational skills. If we again take one step at a time, developing verbal skills would encompass the following:</p>
<p>a) Speaking – This aspect entails being a master of your tongue. It is through this that you will be able to develop your verbal communication skills. A lot of people only speak, without saying anything. You need to understand the difference between these two. Being a successful speaker entails thinking before saying things. Many learned people have often advocated the principle of ‘ Nine thoughts to each word’. This way, we will be able to say the right things most of the time as we will have the time to mull  over what you are going to say. We should realize the importance of verbal communication skills and develop and nurture it.<br />
All of us having used this medium of communication for all our lives take it for granted. This is why language is deteriorating these days. People do not even pay attention to grammar.</p>
<p>b) Listening – The first thing here is that one should understand the difference between listening and hearing. We cannot consciously control our hearing but listening is something we choose to do. Listening encompasses both hearing what others say and understanding it as well. To become an effective conversationalist, one must learn how to listen.</p>
<p>2. WRITTEN – Technology has grown so advanced today that the written word does not hold much importance. Finding writing too much effort, people nowadays avoid it. However to be able to record and transit everything, this medium is extremely essential.</p>
<p>a. Writing – The importance of writing has diminished considerably because of the growth in technology. Even till a few years back, the effectiveness of written communication skills depended on the legibility of one’s handwriting. But now, the entire focus has shifted to grammar and spelling in order to hone written communication skills. You can take the opinion of others and find out if the correct message is being transmitted through your writing. This will determine the effectiveness of your writing.</p>
<p>b. Reading – It is important to read messages in their right content and interpret them correctly. The message need to be interpreted as the writer has meant it. This is especially important where laws, memorandums and other “official” written correspondence is concerned. You need practice and patience in order to develop verbal communication skills. By reading more, you will not only be able to hone your reading skills, but your other communication skills as well.</p>

<p>Learning effective time management is more about consistently learning and applying the system. There are people who got thrilled on the idea, tried it, learned from it, and eventually never did get the hang out of it!</p>
<p>Meeting deadlines and completing tasks in and out of ones career life is quite struggling, but relieving and fulfilling! So, here&#8217;s how to help you in achieving and finding time management a lifetime habit with only 5 essential time management tips to follow:</p>
<p>1. Plan and prioritize. Make a list of all the tasks you need to do in a day. An essential tool to properly list all that you need to carry is a To Do List. This is one of the most simple and effective tool to effectively manage ones time. Simply, segregate it to major and minor to do&#8217;s. Or better yet, categorize it to urgent, important and essential tasks.</p>
<p>2. Focus and set goals. Once you have identified and list by category all the necessary things needed, allocate a reasonable time to finish each task. Think of the bigger picture of what you want to achieve. Break these down into smaller parts and set tagets when you must hit to reach your goal.</p>
<p>By setting clearly defined goals, combat any unnecessary factors that comes your way. When you achieve the goal, go to the next step immediately and then again, set your goals. <br />Remember this mneumonic (SMART): S- Specific, M- Measurable, A- Attainable, R- Realistic, T- Time-bounded.</p>
<p>3. Overcome procrastination. While this may sound a bit complicated, beating the habit of procrastination is learning to say no. Self-control is the key. Identify bad habits and try to overcome them. The habit of procrastination impedes everything you have worked for. It delays important tasks for unnecessary ones, which to some degree becomes a destructive practice. Chances are you get less productive that may lead to less effectiveness and maim your chances towards success.</p>
<p>4. Review and ponder. A good way of getting going is by the end of the day you have to get yourself re-evaluate all the day&#8217;s work. Take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done your task. Ask yourself questions. Have I achieved the goal for the day? If not, just as long as you learn from this, get back to the unfinished business and make necessary adjustments for tomorrow&#8217;s to do&#8217;s. You&#8217;ve got to reflect growths and failures in your knowledge and experience.</p>
<p>5. Commitment. Once you have decided to learn time management, keep the process going. Continuously review and update your daily tasks. As time goes by, learning time management skills will surely become your skill! And you will absolutely get the most out of your life!</p>

<p>When you are conversing with someone, it can be tempting to bring back past issues. This is not a good way to communicate with someone because it tends to cloud what the current issue is. As part of good <strong>communication skills</strong>, it is recommended to stick with the present situation and avoid bringing up the past hurtful issues that may have bothered the other party.</p>

I get to practice healthy communication because the two of us are happy with the end result.</p>

<p>The assessments are usually done in two parts, verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication skill assessment is done to see how proficient an individual is in the usage of words. The test assesses the manner in which we use words to convey the meaning and the meaning that we interpret from the words. This assessment is done through oral or written examinations.</p>
<p>The non-verbal communication skill assessment is done to find out how well a person is able to express oneself with the help of gestures and drawings or other symbolic languages. This process uses observation and evaluation for the assessment.</p>
<p>What should a person&#8217;s response be to a communication skill assessment? </p>
<p>1. Acceptance: The tests are structured to be as objective as possible, and the results are free from any bias. Nobody is perfect and we are all prone to making mistakes. One should not blame others for their mistakes and accept the truth gracefully.<br />
