In recent years the number of nurses has dropped to the point there is a significant need for people in the nursing industry. Nurses are in a position to help influence healthcare needs, which in turn influence healthcare costs. Nursing leadership is in great demand because of all of the new technology we have in the medical field today.

Nursing leadership includes training new nurses to develop the skills they need to perform their duties. New nurses will not be familiar with hospital equipment and how to operate it. They will also not be familiar with the clinical procedures which are needed in the various types of nursing settings.

Nursing leadership includes the ability to be a role model that others can follow. They will have compassion for their patient and they will have the knowledge to give the patient the care they deserve. They must inspire new nurses to give the best possible level of care, while they also must stay abreast of the care given. When you are dealing with the lives of people, you cannot afford to be lax or incompetent.

The Development Of Nursing Leadership

Because of the shortage of nurses, it is prudent to start developing nursing leadership skills as soon as they graduate. Nurses must constantly stay on top of new medical information and will usually attend many training sessions throughout their career. They need to learn how to lead others who will come after them.

Nursing leadership does not stop with administration or managers who are at the higher levels of service. The nurse who is doing the hands on care must learn to develop the skills needed to help new members of their profession. Administrators who are in an office do not have the skills needed to administer the level of care the patients require.

Not all nurses want to be leaders. Some would rather stay followers and avoid some of the headaches associated with nursing leadership. Leadership can often carry a heavy responsibility because of the lives involved. Leaders are usually responsible for those they lead, so mistakes will fall back to them.

Obviously, the nurse has the most contact with the patient and provides the most patient care. They are following orders that are set forth by the physician, but they can still develop leadership qualities that can improve patient care or workplace conditions. Scheduling is a problem for many leaders so perhaps others may be able to help in this area. It is important for healthcare providers to encourage nursing leadership in all of their nursing staff. This will create a better working environment and increase the level of patient care at the same time. By developing leadership skills, they will grow in their profession and will remain satisfied with their career choice.

Servant leadership is a type of leadership defined by the leader playing the role of the steward of resources, whether it is the company, organization or classrooms resources. The leader is a position where they are serving the followers all while paying attention to the results of the project or work of the group. Servant leadership is a concept that works well for people who want to inspire other people to work, rather than telling them to work.

The Beginning

Servant leadership is a leadership theory that was coined by Robert Greenleaf. In his theory of servant leadership, the leader plays a much more important role than just leading a group of people towards a common goal. Instead, the leader becomes much like a father figure. The leader is the person who regulates the resources for the project, giving out what is needed when it is needed. But to define the role in servant leadership, the leader must also take on the responsibilities of a common type of leader. The leader must monitor the progress of the project and make sure the group is staying on task. Also, in servant leadership the leader is obligated to uphold the standards and values of the company to complete the project.

Although Greenleaf is credited for the creation of servant leadership, the concept of servant leadership is thousands of years old. It is an ingrained concept that people take mostly through a type of Christian spirituality. Although servant leadership is a concept that works well in religious settings, it can also be utilized in business and education to teach compassion to the followers. By having a leader that care for more than just the bottom line, people are happier and more willing to work towards that common goal. Inspirational leaders make better leaders because the followers feel more towards the leader than just an obligation to get the job done. They feel like they are making a difference, and that makes them work harder to achieve their goals.

Servant leadership is a good concept to utilize whenever possible. It will create compassionate leaders and followers that are dedicated to achieve the goals not for the leader, but along with the leader. It helps people to know that they are working for each other, and not working under someone. Effective leadership starts with caring about the people as well as the end product. When people are happier about what they are doing, things will get done fast and better than ever before.

Being in any kind of leadership role can be stressful, especially when youre not even sure exactly what role you should be playing. Things can get even tougher when youre put in a situational leadership role. Because most people tend to have their own way of leadership, its hard to put themselves in a situational role but sometimes it cant be helped.

If you find yourself put in a situational leadership role, understanding what the role entails and following a few techniques will get you started on the right road to success as a leader.

What is a Situational Leadership Role?

The role of a situational leader is best played by someone who is empathetic and capable of being under standing to everyones individual needs. This technique can be learned by those who are not naturally empathetic, but it will take some work.

Another thing this role demands is the ability to take nothing personal and to always keep an unbiased open mind. Youll find that each situation with every person you lead is different, so the ability to maneuver from one situation to another quickly, is critical.

Being able to identify with another persons feelings and situations is also another big part of holding a situational leadership role. This is where the empathy comes in. Youll have to identify with peoples need in a way that you can manage them to take care of their issues while still getting what you need from them whether it be work, or children to behave.

How and Where to Learn Situational Leadership Skills

You can learn these skills in a multitude of different ways. By really watching how the people you come into contact with everyday interact with each, you can learn a lot about how to approach and deal with their individual attitudes, personalities and needs.

You can also find classes for different leadership skills, including situational leading at your local community college. They usually offer night classes and even sometimes online classes in order for you to be able to fit the education into your busy schedule. Payment plans and financial aid are viable, low cost options when it comes to funding your situational leadership courses.

If you dont have the time or youre simply not interested in funding a formal education, you can find materials and online courses over the internet to help you with your situational leadership skills.

There are many different theories behind leadership, as well as many different kinds of leadership styles. These theories have changed over the years, and some are viewed as being better or more effective than others. One of the most popular modern day theories regarding leadership is that of transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is different from the traditional leadership theory, but it is perhaps one of the most effective ones to date.

The Thought Behind The Theory

Bass identified transformational leadership, which is why the theory is now known as Bass Transformational Leadership Theory. According to Bass, there are three ways in which leaders motivate followers, which are by increasing their awareness of task importance and value, by activating their higher-order needs and by encouraging them to focus first on organizational and team goals as opposed to their own interests.

Causing A Transformation

Bass theory sounds good, but how does a leader actually go about causing such a change in their followers? Bass identified seven components of transformational leadership that allows the theory to become a reality. The first four of these components are related to charisma. Charisma is seen is being important in a transformational leader. The four charismatic components are inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, idealized influence and intellectual stimulation.

The final three components of transformational leadership are moral. These are the moral character of the leader, the values that can be found in the leaders vision and program, as well as the morality of the processes and action of the leaders group.

The Dynamic Differences

The major differences between transformational leadership and other forms of leadership is that transformational leadership focuses mainly on the goals and aspirations of the group itself. Other forms of leadership, known as pseudo-transformational, tend to focus on opposing groups in order to unite the group and create a stronger sense of unity.

If you work for a transformational leader, the major difference you will notice is the level of excitement and passion that they themselves possess and that they inspire in all of their followers. This is a characteristic that is not unique in transformational leadership, but that is most common in this area.

Inspired Devotion

A leader requires only two things including a goal and people to help him or her reach that goal. If you are passionate about the first and have the ability to make others feel the same way, then the second will not take long to follow.
