When asking the question what is leadership, one tends to think of people who are successful. The real fact is all successful people are not good leaders. You may have a successful football player that can help his team make it to the Super Bowl, but that does not necessarily mean that he could be a good coach. It is true that most successful coaches were good football players at one time, but not all players possess the ability to lead the team.

A leader is someone who has a vision and knows how they want to achieve that vision. When they talk about the future they do so with positive enthusiasm. When asking what leadership is, you are trying to determine if that person has the qualities to motivate others to do what is needed of them. A leader must be excited about the challenges which face them and they must anticipate each hurdle with excitement.

What Is Leadership The Test

When you are looking for a person to serve in a leadership role, there are several things that can help you determine who the right person is. A leader is never satisfied with things the way they are. A leader always looks for ways to improve a situation, product, or service.

What is leadership in the workplace? It is a person who is willing to listen to ideas and adapt to change if change will make conditions better. A leader will be someone who is respected by their peers, even if their peers do not entirely believe in everything they do. Leadership is not a popularity contest, but there must be a quality present that says I know what I am doing. A good leader will be able to ask something of others without the others showing resentment.

You can always ask a person what is leadership in their opinion, and then you can judge their answer. A true leader will show you their mental strength and tell you what leadership means to them. They will be able to give you ideas about their leadership qualities and how they plan to achieve the respect which is afforded a leader.

A leader will also be able to take criticism and understand that it is for their benefit. A leader will possess a strong ability to listen and learn, as well as lead and motivate others. A leader will have to ability to command attention. When they talk, people will listen to what they have to say. A lot of people can get up and make a speech in front of an audience, but a true leader can capture the attention of that audience and make them listen.

If no one wants to take charge and you step in make sure you don’t overuse the power. It all depends on the situation. If there’s a team project and you take up that position it is important that you know what you’re doing (as in organized and have plans) and make sure you have an open mind to what everyone has to bring to the table. If all you do is do what you want no one will wanna work with you so listen to others. As a leader, sometimes you have to delegate and allow others to do things so listening to what your team members have to say is important.

If you care about developing yourself as a leader, if you want more effective leadership skills, what should you do? What’s the best approach?

A lot of books have been written about leadership. There are hundreds in print right now. Many articles and videos are available on the topic, too. You’ll also find quite a few training programs, both online and on-site, and many are extremely well produced.

But to help you navigate through all these resources, consider this: there’s a huge difference between KNOWING something and DOING something. In the end, what you know is far less important than what you do with the knowledge. When you’re with people, are you applying what you learned? If you don’t translate knowledge into action, it’s not of much use to you.

Practically speaking, the best books, videos and training programs do a couple things. First, they present a model of effective leadership skills – they show you what you should be doing on the job. The problem is, not all of them do that. They may contain a lot of good information about leadership principles. Hopefully, the treatment is interesting. You may get some self-awareness; it’s always good to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. But what you really need to know is what you should be doing to get the best effort from your people. So ideally, you learn about a model of how to act with people. If the resource doesn’t give you this, you’re probably wasting your time with it.

But knowing what to do – having good models for effective leadership skills – is only the beginning.

A training course – even a two-week course, which is rare – isn’t enough to make you so comfortable with effective leadership skills that you wouldn’t hesitate to use them with people. The reason is that these courses have a lot of topics to cover and there’s not much time for in-class practice. It takes time to ingrain a skill to the point where you’d instinctively use it in the real world of work. That’s because it takes time for the brain cells involved in the skill to grow connections and form a network that makes the skill efficient and comfortable. You have to apply what you learned over and over again to rewire your brain for the skill. How long depends on how many opportunities you take to apply it. The idea is to make an effective leadership skill a work habit, and that could take months, or as long as a year.

That’s how you develop any habit, a skill, or a behavior pattern. There’s no shortcut. You have to do the work. And the only place this can happen is on the job.

When it comes to developing effective leadership skills, experience really is the best teacher. A smart manager takes cues from her interactions with people. For example, someone might say, “I don’t like it when you talk to me that way.” Or something might go wrong in your group. You may be trying things and they’re not working. Each of these instances is an experience from which you can learn.

So when you pick up suggestions about what to do as a leader, try them and learn from the experiences. If you do this, day after day, year after year, you’re going to be involved in the best kind of leadership development program there is.

My son joined when he was 15 and managed to do it. This is basically a leadership training program, very good for you. It used to impress admissions committees no end.

Run for president of any of those clubs you’re in.

What is a leadership skill?  There are numerous skills you desire if you want to be an effective manager or leader.  One important leadership skill is motivation, for example.  You must be able to motivate your team to reach a common goal.  Sounds easy enough, but it isn’t always that simple.  This is just one of many; if you want to be a great manager or leader, read about each individual leadership skill to determine if you possess the characteristics to manage a group of people effectively.

If you are a leader, you likely have a vision; this means that you can spot a problem that perhaps others cannot see, or even if they can you are willing to go forward and tackle the problem, reach the goal – do whatever is necessary to improve the situation. See if you have each leadership skill below, and if your skill is fully developed to its optimum potential.

The ability to take action. This is an essential leadership skill; after all, if you are not able to take action toward pursuing goals, that means you will not be able to carry forward with any other necessary skills such as motivating, communicating or planning. As a leader, you must be willing to take initiative and get things done. You don’t wait around on someone else to get the ball rolling; you are ready and willing to do it yourself.

One extremely important leadership skill is effective communication. You talk to people every day, sure – but it takes more than the simple ability to talk or write to communicate with your workers.  It is essential that you communicate in a way that your employees understand clearly the goal you are moving toward, and that they are excited and motivated about accomplishing that goal. You want to instill confidence in them and make them feel part of the “team.”

Motivation is perhaps THE leadership skill above all others that you must possess in order to be an outstanding manager.  In every group, there are those people who are willing to do their best for the company, and there are always those “difficult” people that seem to disagree at every turn.  Motivation is a leadership skill that is crucial in order to persuade every person on the team to want to do their best – and you have to know how to push those buttons.

The ability to plan is another necessary leadership skill.  In order to reach the end result you desire, you have to plan to achieve that goal.  Careful thought and planning will help you keep your team moving toward the goal so that should any “glitch” or problem occur, you know how to move beyond that problem swiftly.

When reading about each leadership skill above, does it strike a chord with you?  Some individuals have what is necessary to become a great leader, but needs to develop their skills further. How To Improve Your Leadership Skills – Leadership Traits

As a business owner, you may feel that one leadership skill is more essential to the survival of your company than another.  While it may seem that a single leadership skill enhances your organization more than others, there are seven that are crucial to according to an article posted on Money Central.  This article was contributed by Gartner, Inc. and Korn/Ferry.  When it comes to leadership skill, there are seven that are necessary to drive results in any business environment, according to the article.  These relate particularly to IT executives.

Interviews were conducted in order to determine the most essential leadership skill; as a result of the interviews, it was determined that those who excel at leading people, setting aggressive goals and holding those under their leadership accountable for exceptional performance achieved the best results.  Take a look at the seven areas below to determine if you believe a single leadership skill is more effective than the rest:

Commit to leadership first; everything else comes second

With this leadership skill, individuals embrace the idea that accomplishments will be achieved totally through people; this means by individual employees, good leaders and through team work.  

Lead in a different manner than you think

Some leaders are extremely creative and complex thinkers, yet when it comes to this leadership skill, they work with employees and other personnel in a way that all can understand and use to the advantage of the company.  They don’t try to push their “analytical” skills on others.

Become more vulnerable

An important leadership skill, according to the article, is letting go of control occasionally in order to gain more influence.  When a leader is more vulnerable, deep connections can be formed that enable people both inside and outside of the organization to become inspired. 

Relationship management

By forging the right relationships, extraordinary results can be achieved.  This leadership skill is one that many successful managers possess.  By spending the time and energy to manage relationships with peers, suppliers and customers, a solid foundation for success is built.

Establish core messages and values

Communication is an essential leadership skill, especially between managers and employees.  It is necessary that leaders and managers realize that employees are always watching; leaders should reiterate core messages and values consistently, so that those under them understand what the goal and messages of the company are.  Through good communications, employees are motivated and compelled to take the correct actions.

Inspire your staff

Most people give a certain amount of themselves to their job performance, but with inspiration that will give more of their energy and motivation.  Good managers use this leadership skill often; they know that when employees feel that their work is meaningful and valued by the company, they will give their all.

Realize that people make a business successful, not systems

Nearly every successful business owner knows that it is the people who ultimately make the business thrive, not systems.  By using leadership skills that motivate employees and make them feel an essential part of the whole picture, leaders can increase their ability and capacity to deliver exceptional results.  This means that even after current management is long gone, a strong network of people will be the lasting legacy of the company.

Which Leadership Skill is Most Essential? The Question That Cannot Be Answered

Successful entrepreneurs know that in the process of building a business, leadership skills is not an option, it is a must. As an entrepreneur, developing your leadership skills is all about developing your mindset and the way you handle people or situations.

I want to share with you few tips that can help you improve your leadership skills but before i do, let me tell you why leadership skill is a necessity.

As an entrepreneur, i see myself as the pilot of a plane. The crew and passengers represent my employees, customers and investors. All of them are relying on me to pilot them to the promise land. If you can see the picture i am trying to paint, then you will realize the importance of developing not only your leadership skills but your business skills in general.

Now how do you develop leadership skills?

The first thing you need to work on to develop the skills is your attitude towards failure. How you react in the face of failure will determine how strong your leadership skills will be.

Successful entrepreneurs don’t accept the word called “failure.” They don’t see failure; they only see an opportunity to learn something new from their mistakes. For me, i don’t fail. I make mistakes and experience few setbacks but i don’t see myself as a failure. One of my mentors, Henry Ford says it all. “Failure is just a resting place. It is just an opportunity to begin again more intelligently”

So if you are going to be a great leader in business, you must change your perception and mindset towards failure. Don’t run and hide when you make a mistake. Don’t blame others, face your mistakes squarely and learn something. Remember, mistakes are great learning tools.

The second key to developing your leadership skills is self control. In the word of business and leadership, self control is omnipotent. If you lack self control, forget about leadership and forget about being in business. How can you control your employees, customers and investors when you can’t control yourself?

Nobody is going to follow a leader who has no control over himself, so take note.

The third key to look at is your personal standard. Successful entrepreneurial leaders are known to have high self imposed personal standard. To this set of entrepreneurs, their integrity is worth more than the money. So if you want to lead in business, you must be firm. You must never compromise your standard.

In your service to customers, you must not compromise quality in the name of increasing profit. Quality will surely payback in the form of customer’s loyalty.

Next on the line is your appearance. We can’t talk about developing leadership skills without including appearance or outlook. If you are going to be a leader that employees and investors will follow, then your outlook should speak leadership. Your charisma should be bold and appealing so that when you talk, people will listen.

Even in the face of criticism, your facial appearance should display a high level of confidence. Keep your fears to yourself and talk positive.

The fifth key to developing your leadership skills is to develop your communication skill. Great leaders are great communicators. To be a great leader in business, you must learn how to effectively communicate with your employees, customers and investors. In fact, communication skill is so essential that its importance can never be over emphasized. Now let me ask:

How can you raise capital to start a business if you cannot communicate or sell your ideas to investors?

How can you convince a customer that your product is of highest quality when you cannot communicate?

How can you inspire your employees to be the best and achieve greatness when you cannot communicate?

I believe with these questions, you will come to realize that communication is very vital in world of leadership and business in general.

In conclusion, it is important you know that businesses and investors are looking for strong leaders with business skills to pilot their business and grow their money respectively. Before i rest my pen, i will leave you with this word of wisdom.
