It doesn’t get any better than perfect, right? If a project or task is done perfectly then it’s the most we could hope for. Perfection is what we all should strive for whether we’re working for ourselves or someone else. Employers always seek employees who make every effort to get it perfect. Is this how you think? These are a few of the thoughts most people have about people who are perfectionists and perfectionism in general. Well, in theory this is good; but in reality perfectionism has a few drawbacks. The dictionary says perfection is an unsurpassable degree of accuracy or excellence. It’s the act or process of perfecting something to a level for which most of us refuse to attain.

Perfectionism has been defined as when someone strives toward goals that are usually impossibly high but won’t settle for anything less. If it’s less than perfect they view it as unacceptable. If someone else does a better job, the perfectionist can go into depression and become useless on the next assignment or project. They feel they cannot be outdone. Rather than finish a job with imperfection, they had rather do nothing than risk not meeting their own self-imposed standards.

If you’ve been described as a perfectionist and want to change the way you are, the first thing you need to do is be aware of this condition and potential problems. It can be a blessing or a curse. It depends on how you handle it. Procrastination can be misdiagnosed as laziness. You may delay getting started on a task because you’re working to get it done perfectly. Work is never begun because you’re spending time planning every minute detail.

Perfectionists may be viewed as procrastinators and this can be true. You put off working because the project may be overwhelming with its magnitude and you don’t feel you can do it justice in the time allotted. You won’t settle for a vague estimate, you demand detailed figures before you begin. Typically, if you’re working for someone else, you must at least get something done every day. Set deadlines for yourself on a portion of the project and see to it that these deadlines are met regardless if it meets your standards.

What’s unacceptable to you may be perfectly fine for others. To help you meet your deadlines it might be wise to ask someone to keep a check on you to make sure you’re keeping on schedule. Learn to be flexible and how to bend your own requirements until you reach a compromise. Allow yourself to do a less than perfect job and then listen to the critiques of your friends and co-workers. They’ll probably wonder how it could be any better. Concentrate on the work you’re accomplishing and don’t worry about the end product. By doing this, the task you’ve tackled will eventually be complete and you’ll find you can function with perfectionism in a less than perfect world.

Many people have developed a deep distrust of bosses or managers, which is often due to their experience with current or past managers. They turn to the informal leaders – fellow workers who have gained their respect and whose opinions and actions they admire and emulate. The effective leader recognizes the influence these men and women have in the acceptance of new ideas among their followers.

If you think that your leadership abilities is deteriorating then check the following 6 tips:

1. The job of the manager has changed and evolved. You can no longer be a “boss.”, those days are long gone you must now step up to the plate and become a leader.
2. Too often managers get too complacent and they think their management style is working well, when in fact, it isn’t working at all.
3. Evaluate how you are leading by identifying areas in which you must change.
4. Study and research the traits of great leaders in the past and present. Learn from them – Emulate them.
5. Have a clear vision of what you wish to accomplish. Articulate it, communicate it, stick to it.
6. Commit yourself to take whatever action is necessary to become not just an average, but a great leader.

A great way of learning time management and improving your personal life is to follow several basic activities.

One of them is to review your goals whether it be immediate or long-term goals often.

A way to do this is to keep a list that is always accessible to you.

Always determine which task is necessary or not necessary in achieving your goals and which activities are helping you maintain a balanced life style.

Each and everyone of us has a peek time and a time when we slow down, these are our natural cycles. We should be able to tell when to do the difficult tasks when we are the sharpest.

Learning to say “No”. You actually see this advice often. Heed it even if it involves saying the word to family or friends.

Pat yourself at the back or just reward yourself in any manner for an effective time management result.

Try and get the cooperation from people around you who are actually benefiting from your efforts of time management.

Don’t procrastinate. Attend to necessary things immediately.

Have a positive attitude and set yourself up for success. But be realistic in your approach in achieving your goals.

Have a record or journal of all your activities. This will help you get things in their proper perspective.

These are the few steps you initially take in becoming a well rounded individual.

As the say personal time management is the art and science of building a better life.

From the moment you integrate into your life time management skills, you have opened several options that can provide a broad spectrum of solutions to your personal growth. It also creates more doors for opportunities to knock on.

When you first become a leader, it can be a terrifying experience. After all, you have people who are supposed to follow you and look up to you. What if you make a mistake? What if you run your organization or cause into the ground? What if you fail? These are all questions that are likely to run through your mind when you first become a leader but if you learn the steps of leadership development and you learn to recognize them, you are sure to succeed. You just have to have a little faith and you have to understand the privilege and the honor you’ve been given.

Lead By Example

The first step of leadership development is leading by example. If you do this, you are sure to succeed. It doesn’t matter if you are the manager of a supermarket, the manager of a fast food restaurant, a Boy Scout troop leader, or just the leader of a neighborhood watch group. Whatever you happen to be leading, lead by example and everything else should just fall into place. However, you should prepare for a few bumps along the line.

Firm But Fair

The next step in leadership development is when you have to discipline someone. It’s going to happen no matter what or whom you happen to be leading. Either someone isn’t pulling their weight, or someone’s constantly tardy or absent, or someone is being disruptive to the rest of the group. When disciplining others, you need to be firm to an extent. Don’t instill fear because that is definitely not a good step in leadership development. Instead, be firm, as in enforce the rules, give adequate discipline, but also be fair, as in give chances when they’re warranted. When that doesn’t work, we come to the last step of leadership development.

Letting Someone Go

Sometimes, when going through the steps of leadership development, there comes a time when you have to let someone go, or fire them. This step of leadership development is very difficult the first time you have to do it and it doesn’t really get any easier the more experience you have at it. You have to remember, though, that sometimes, letting someone go is good for the benefit of the rest of the group. By getting rid of the weakest link, in other words, the chain becomes stronger, and your organization, and your subordinates, will be better off without that person disrupting them or pulling them down.
